Finding a place outside of mainstream sport

"One thing that is great about roller derby is that it is a sport for kids that haven't found their home in more "mainstream" sports.

Today’s spotlight is on our newest Activity Partner, the Victorian Roller Derby League (aka VRDL). VRDL has programs for children aged 8 – 16 years of age. Like the inclusive nature of the sport, VRDL welcomes kids from all walks of life. VRDL is particularly proud to be a safe place for several non-binary and LGBTQI kids and coaches, children in Out-Of-Home Care, neurodiverse and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Tara Kennaway of VRDL says “One thing that is great about roller derby, is that it is a sport for kids that haven't found their home in more "mainstream" sports. Kids can choose their own "derby name" and we find that helps them to really be themselves. There is a place for every body type in the sport too as different shapes & sizes have different advantages in the positions on a team. For those who just enjoy roller skating, the skills you can learn are almost never ending and for kids who want to play the sport, they learn to use their bodies in different ways to be proud of how strong, agile and fierce they can be.”
